Dear all, please find hereafter the document presented by Remi DAUDIN, the VP in charge of Materi’act in addition of his sustainability function at the group
Key points in my notes:
11 participants.
Materi’act is part of the net zero C02 Forvia target 2045 with achieving -45% reduction in 2030 which means including product delivered to customer and their CO2 impact during usage. This cannot be achieved without changing the product, and changing the material of the products, because Forvia suppliers will not be ready at that level.
Remember, Forvia is the 1st automotive company which get his plan approved by SBTI, a science based company which has validated the plan and metrics.
Materi’act is a subsidiary of Forvia located in Ladoix, Lyon area, close to chemical industries, universities, within an attractive area to facilitate the recruitment of 400 people by 2025, with a target of sales of 2B€ by 2030. Currently mainly high level engineers, 20% PhD, 40% women. Location was also chosen to be far from any Forvia R&D centers to demonstrate independence from the mother company and credibility to all customers. Facilities in Lyon will include lab and injection preproduction up to door panels size. An incubator of startups will also be in the facility. Mother plant is located in Dijon through APM JV.
Strategy to produce C02 free materials is based on
Recycled materials
Biomass, creating monomers the polymers thanks to photosynthesis / bacteria …
While ensuring no other harm is made to water/ biodiversity/ pollution/ etc.
Materi’act will develop and produce sustainable materials for every customers, Forvia and outside including non-automotive for 50% midterm, and worldwide though partnership under negotiation in Asia and USA.
Product portfolio is
Compounds:
in production with NafiLean by APM (Forvia JV) , compound of Hemp (grown though a farmer cooperative Interval in France) and pure PP. 10 years of experience
In development and first OEM order received, is the evolution of NafiLean to replace PP by recycled plastic (partnership with Veolia) creating a CO2 free product. Current applications are a safe substitution of PP by this green material on non-visible materials
In development, is a NafiLean where visible hemps particles will be a visible asset of sustainable material used for the end user
Foils using natural Fibers to replace leather or other skins
Carbon fibers low CO2 for hydrogen tanks
Green steel (2027 target): Replace coke by green hydrogen reduction and therefore eliminate CO2. Partnership with
Product/ Process challenge is to overcome the variability of recycled plastic and the hemp, this might need adaptative formula to secure stable final product characteristics. Currently 450 formula are existing !
Another challenge is also to source recycled plastic, Veolia has not enough capacity
Competition are current Compounders and recycling companies, but so far Forvia is the only one to be able to inject hemp.
Good luck to Materi’act 😊
And so many thanks again for Remi to spend part of his precious time with us.
